Unlimit Ventures helps Eisana Health Bring Impactful Innovation to Cancer Patients
Medical Device Startup Engineering Support
Eisana Health believes unnecessary pain and suffering should never be the price of survival. “Cancer is bad enough. We are passionate about preventing side effects from cancer treatment so that survivors can live their best lives”, said Carole Spangler Vaughn, CEO of Eisana Health and cancer survivor.
Their first product is a novel device to prevent the permanent and painful nerve damage in hands and feet that are caused by many common chemo drugs. This “chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy” or CIPN has no cure and can leave patients with a permanent disability. Several studies have shown that cooling the hands and feet can prevent this nerve damage. However, the challenge to patients is that they need to cool, without stopping, for several hours on the day of chemotherapy because it takes several hours for the drug to drop to a safe level in the body. Carole reports, “Patients are struggling with bowls of ice water, baggies of crushed ice, or freezable mitts and socks. While these are uncomfortable and can cause frostbite, the bigger issue is that patients must stop cooling to use their phone, eat or drink, or simply walk around.”
Eisana Health is solving this problem by creating a device that patients can function in, and also move around. This requires a small chiller unit which is being developed in partnership with Unlimit Ventures.
“Unlimit understands startups and acts as an extension of the Eisana team versus just as a contractor. We’ve been able to work with them on discrete sprints, with fixed costs and tangible outcomes. We are not just a project for them to complete, but they truly engage in our solution, thinking outside of the box to attain great results with limited capital.”
Thanks Carole!! Great to work with you as well and excited for what is to come in the future.
